HSU Research: ULS-15 Subwoofer
HSU Research has introduced the new ULS-15 subwoofer. According to the company, it can reach ultra low level down to 10Hz in most rooms with almost no distortion. The main point of this sub is its wireless connection, this makes it so much easier to optimally place the subwoofer without the clutter of cables. The ULS-15 is powered by a 1000W BASH amplifier with balanced inputs, adjustable cutoff frequency and switchable phase.
The ULS-15 features a woofer with patented super linear motor. The motor force is linear within 2% over an ultra wide +/- 20 mm. In contrast, most woofers with Xmax of +/- 30 mm will have the motor force within 2% over 5 mm or less. It also has a butyl rubber foam surround. Butyl rubber foam has the longevity of solid butyl rubber without the weight penalty. Triple shorting rings mean virtually non-existent flux modulation distortion.
The ULS-15 pricing starts at $1,299 in a satin black finish up to $1,499 for the piano gloss black finish.

Samsung has done a rather unique spin on the whole sound bar in front of the flat panel thing, unveiling the other day a sound bar which doubles as a self-contained DVD system. It is called the Samsung HT-X810 and pricing is said to be around $700.

Samsung HT-X810
The Samsung HT-X810 is, according to Samsung, a virtual 5.1-channel system which incorporates an upconverting DVD player and FM tuner. It makes use of 5.8 GHz technology to connect with the included wireless subwoofer and also incorporates Bluetooth so one can stream from Bluetooth-enabled mobile devices and home theater components.
Features of the HT-X810 include HDMI output, a slot-in interface for the DVDs, 300 watts of total power and the ability to play media off of attached USB devices. It is available now.

If you’ve been a fan of Heco’s speakers from afar, you’ll be glad to hear the company’s Aleva range is to be released in the UK by distributor Pure Sound.Prices range from £500 for the bookshelf Aleva 200 speakers and go up to £1000 for the floorstanding Aleva 400s.
The Aleva range has newly developed drives complete with ‘Kraft‘ paper cones, which are made from a mixture of long fibre pulp and wool. These are said to resemble the paper used in ‘classic drivers’ – we’re talking Western Electric and Saba, not Ayrton Senna.
The driver chassis are diamond finished aluminium castings, while the tweeters have an aluminium faceplate, too. The MDF cabinets are available in cherry read wood veneers as well as silver and black lacquer finishes.
The floorstanding models feature integrated plinths and are biwirable.
Other than the prices listed above, details remain sketchy – not least on the subwoofer and any 5.1 system. Keep your eyes on the site for more details as and when we get them.

Paradigm has introduced its 4th generation PDR subwoofers, the PDR-8 and PDR-10. Both models are reinforced polymer-composite cones on the 8.5″ and 10.5″ single forward-firing drivers. The new cone material ensures excellent rigidity and superb internal damping.
Two RCA (L/R-Mono) line-level inputs have been added to accommodate L/R line or Sub-Outputs as well as LFE-Outputs for receivers, processors and other line-level sources. They also offer auto-On/Off, phase alignment switch for 0 degrees or 180 degrees and cut-off frequency control.
The Paradigm PDR-8 v.4 and PDR-10 v.4 have removable grilles (for customization) and will be available in black or silver color.

Artcoustic, the world leader in modern and contemporary wall mounted high-end speaker systems, have expanded their product line with the introduction of the new Diablo Sub Panel Subwoofer that establishes a new benchmark in performance and design. This compact and beautifully designed new model is a creation of Mr. Kim Donvig and performs like a professional subwoofer, delivering exceptionally powerful and dynamic output.

The Diablo Sub Panel is a passive design and uses the new Artcoustic PA-1800. This is a big upgrade on the older version and features 3 channels of amplification. 1×900 watts and 2×450 watts. The passive sub offers fantastic flexibility in installations as only speaker cable is required to run to the subwoofer. No mains power is needed to the enclosure. This enables the subwoofer to be placed where it looks and sounds its best , rather than near a power outlet. Because the Diablo is so flexible in it’s positioning, this also makes for a simpler and cleaner installation. The Diablo can be positioned easily and discreetly eliminating obtrusive cable displays thereby avoiding the new regulations that require main outlets to be positioned higher than previously and resulting in unattractive power line displays.

If you’ve living in an extremely cramped apartment and do not have the luxury of space to set up a decent surround sound system in your living room, there is always the Surround Sound Chair. Sitting on it will find yourself enveloped in all five speakers, including an integrated 12″ subwoofer.
The speakers were placed and directed in such a manner that prevents sound from reflecting off the walls and ceiling, ensuring you get the most accurate sound reproductoin possible. I just wonder whether you will be able to hear the phone ringing while sitting in the thick of action. Do you think $3,000 is an investment well worth the price for the Surround Sound Chair?

Another current work in progress from AV123 is the X-Plosive subwoofer. The X-Plosive uses a custom 10″ woofer and 12″ passive radiator in a slot-loaded enclosure, powered by a 150 watt amplifier. AV123 claims that the use of the highly efficient woofer makes the X-Plosive comparable in output to other subwoofers with 500 watts of power.

Approximate dimensions are 24 3/8″ D x 15 3/4″ W x 16 1/2″ H, with weight yet to be determined. The X-Plosive will come standard with a satin black finish priced at $399. Cherry, Moho, Palisander Natural, and Palisander Rosa real wood satin finishes will be available as $50 options.
Words from AV123:
Features:
- Driver: Custom 10″ active and 12″ passive drivers
- Amplifier: 150 watts RMS (the driver is ultra-efficient so you should compare this to 500 watts with a normal driver)
- Cabinet: Typical excellent AV123 build quality. Well braced. Choice of real wood veneers.
- Dims: 24 3/8″ Deep x 15 3/4″ Wide x 16 1/2″ high (approximate!)
- Weight: TBD

In celebration of the first decade of Hong Kong’s reunification with China, the Hong Kong Design Center organized “Project 9707″ to recognize Hong Kong’s local design industry and support design education. “Creation 9707″ (part of the larger project 9707) is a collaboration of ten internationally renowned brand names with ten accomplished Hong Kong designers to produce ten creative products. KEF’s Stringless Pleasure is one of these ten. Developed in collaboration with Italian furniture brand Giorgetti and designer and architect Lo Chi Wing, Stringless Pleasure is an instrument without strings.
It is equipped with two concentric driver speakers, a subwoofer, CD player and built-in iPod dock. The cabinetry is made from Zitan, a rare species of wood used for musical instruments in ancient China, and the control dials are made from precious stones. The ten-decimeter long sound-bridge commemorates the ten years. Only ten Stringless Pleasures will be available worldwide.
