iRiver Integrates GPS Into Latest PMP

Allan Ford September 21, 2007

iRiver has been has been making a good fist of things lately and this looks set to continue…

The company has now confirmed what looks to be its best player to date in the slinky shape of the ‘W10’ – a PMP with a difference. This 3in 480 x 272 touchscreen device integrates WiFi with Skyhook’s GPS positioning (it works using WiFi hotspots for urban, rather than road, orientated navigation) and NAVTEQ maps.

On top of this VoIP is shoved in there along with an FM tuner, AOL XM radio streaming, support for MP3, Ogg, WMA, Mpeg4 and WMV9 audio and video codecs and a miniSD expansion slot. The W10 is headed to the US first since its Skyhook GPS system currently doesn’t have mapping for Europe, but expect that to change in the coming months. 2GB, 4GB and 8GB capacities will all be released but when and what for were kept under wraps for now.

iRiver is beginning to forge a pretty impressive rep for itself so expect to find this multitalented PMP on official release pre-Chrimbo. If you have a whole range of weaponry to grind with Apple then this could be as good an alternative as any…
