Samsung shows 10mm thin 40 inch Full HD LCD Display

Allan Ford October 22, 2007

Who needs OLED TVs, if it is possible to make LCD displays as thin as 10mm?

Samsung will show a 40 inch full HD LCD Panel with a stunning 10mm thin canvas at the FPD International 2007.

This new display, expected to usher in the next wave of large-screen TVs, has the same profile as 10-20 inch LCDs designed for desktop monitors. Its bezel has been reduced from a conventional 30mm to 14.6mm. The panel, using an LED backlight, reproduces 92% of the NTSC standard for color saturation and features low power consumption of 90 watts or less.
The currently available Sony OLED TV Xel-1 is only 3mm thin, but the size is only 11 inches.
LCD technology is still way cheaper than OLED for TVs. Looks like thin is the new differentiator for large screen TVs.

Besides the thin 40 inch LCD display, Samsung will also show at the FDP 2007 a 15.4” LCD with active white-LED backlight, 22” desktop LCD with DisplayPort interface, 46” digital information display (1500nits), 7” mobile display with touch screen, 2.1” LCD with sensor-based automatic brightness control, 14.3” plastic display, 8.1”e-paper and a 14.1”active-matrix OLED

The FPD International will start on October 24th in Yokohama, Japan.
