Naim’s New Supernait Integrated Amplifier

Allan Ford November 8, 2007

The Supernait is an integrated amplifier with built in DAC that’s designed to seamlessly incorporate digital and analog sources into your home theater. The amp features six analog inputs and five digital inputs that utilize a Burr Brown 24 bit/192Khz multibit DAC.

The Supernait incorporates a 400VA toroid transformer with seven separate transformer windings to isolate different channels of the power amplifier and preamp. In addition, the amp can be upgraded with an external power amplifier to isolate the power channels even further. All of this carefully designed equipment is also pretty powerful, with the Supernait being able to output 80 watts per channel at 8 ohms. The Naim Supernait is now available in the states for a price of $4,950.

Words from Naim:

In addition to six analogue inputs, the SUPERNAIT features five digital inputs with a built-in DAC, accepting sampling rates between 32 kHz and 192 kHz, with selective re-clocking at 44.1 / 48 / 88.2 / 96 / 192 kHz sample rates. The PCM digital inputs can be either coaxial RCA (2) or Toslink® optical (2), which are ideal for connection to a computer or other digital source with perhaps a dirtier than normal ground plane. The digital circuitry powers down when unused.

Preamplifier inputs: cd (DIN-5 / 2 RCA), tuner (DIN-5 / 2 RCA), tape (DIN-5 / 2 RCA), av (DIN-5 / 2 RCA, unity-gain capable), aux 1 (2 RCA), or aux 2 (DIN-5 240° power socket for optional Stageline phono preamp). All buttons alternately mappable to 2 coaxial digital (RCA) / 2 optical digital (Toslink) inputs into built-in DAC. [Front-panel analogue / digital input (1/8” mini-jack) automatically maps to aux 1 button when inserted.]

Preamplifier outputs: subwoofer (2 RCA, resistor-buffered), bi-amp (DIN-4), headphone output (1/8” mini-jack with selectable speaker muting), preamp out (DIN-5 240°, for use with FLATCAP2x, HICAP2, or SUPERCAP2 power supply), buffered tape output (DIN-5 / 2 RCA with independent source selection from analogue inputs / DAC output).

Power amplifier: 80 watts per channel into 8 ohms / 400VA output transient capability / toroidal transformer with 7 separate windings for power ampifier and preamplifier supplies / DIN-4 signal input for standalone use Connectivity: IR remote (included) / (de-)modulated IR input & output (1/8” mini jacks) / optional RS-232 module

Dimensions: 17” W x 12.25” D x 3.375” H (approx)
