Panasonic Announces PZ85, PZ80, PX80 Plasma TVs

Allan Ford March 5, 2008

We’ve been pretty enamoured with Panasonic’s current range of HDTVs, often citing them as the next best thing to a KURO. Now that dividing line may be about to get even thinner because the PZ85, PZ80 and PX80 plasma ranges have just been updated.

Up first the PZ85 series, which will come in 46in and 42in flavours with Full HD, 1,920 x 1080 resolutions, claimed 30,000:1 contrast ratios and boast 24p playback, unlike the current crop of Panasonic sets. A processing feature, dubbed Intelligent Frame Creation, will aim to create smoother images by, as the name suggests, adding extra frames between those from the TVs source. Release of this pair is set for this month.

The PZ80 range will again offer 1080p panels, this time in 42in, 46in and 50in sizes. No contrast ratio figures are mentioned as yet, but we do know that 100Hz modes, V-Real Pro 3 video processing and a trio of HDMI ports are to be found. Currently it looks like the three different sizes are set to launch consecutively in April, May and June, although in what order is unknown.

Last and, spec-wise, least the PX80 plasmas will come with mere HD Ready 720p-friendly resolutions, with both a 37in and 42in model on offer. However apart from the resolution the specs are still good, with V-Real Pro 3 processing and 100Hz image modes still on board as well as, again, three HDMI ports. Availability for this range is also set for this month although, as with all these HDTVs, no pricing
