Smart move from Denon with 2.1 cinema systems

Allan Ford September 19, 2007

19.denon_s302_system.jpgDenon has unveiled its latest additions to its’S’ (Smart) Series, the S-102 and S-302. The two new 2.1 virtual surround systems are set for release this October, to be followed by the S-32 table-top audio system.

The main addition to the DVD micro systems are network functionality, in the form of a wired Ethernet connection on the S-102 but with built-in Wi-Fi on the top-of-the-range S-302 (pictured).

Both systems boast upgraded speakers and subwoofer, the sub being noticeably smaller than on the first generation models. Speakers can still be paired with either floorstanding stands or with trimmed down desktop offerings.

The S-102 (£800), now upscales video content to 1080p via HDMI, while the S-302 (£1250) can upconvert anything from composite signals upwards and output via the HDMI connection.

Also on board was a smart, colourful new GUI that looks to be more icon-led rather than reams of text – perhaps taking a hint from Sony dare we say – while Denon’s proprietary technology Audyssey Dynamic EQ is also inside.

While we’re talking specs, Denon is also eager to point out that the same AL24 processing technology found on the company’s receivers and sources is here, alongside high quality DACs.

Both feature iPod connections, USB inputs and freshly designed remote controls. Also sounding very interesting was the S-32 complete micro system that clearly took its design nods from the Bose Wave radio.

Denon was hush-hush about information but we can tell you that the system packs in a mass of functionality thanks to DAB/FM tuners, a CD player, USB and minijack inputs, an iPod dock, WiFi connectivity and clock radio functions
