HD DVD / Blu-ray Special Feature: 7. Warner Brothers

Allan Ford January 7, 2008

07-hd_dvd_blu_ray_special_feature.gifWho are they?

Hollywood studio who supposedly broke contract to move from supporting both main high definition disc formats to exclusively supporting Blu-ray from May 2008.

Their move means that around 70% of mainstream Hollywood movies released in the high definition format will be on Blu-ray.

What they should do

Sell off their HD DVD stock dirt cheap, so at least early adopters can gather the last remnants before they’re consigned to second hand shops and eBay.

Release quality films from their back catalogue, along with new releases, to increase the crop of high calibre movies available on Blu-ray.

What they’ll probably do

Charge top dollar for their existing HD DVD stock — it’s still stock right?

Release a lot of rubbish into the marketplace to justify their move to Blu-ray — "look how many titles we’ve brought to the format" — shame no-one wants to watch them.

What it means for us

HD DVD owners either need to buy all the Warner movies they want in the next five months, or buy a Blu-ray player.

Blu-ray owners need not panic — unless someone defects again. Stranger things have happened.
