Samsung eyes iPhone for music player UI

Allan Ford August 30, 2007

31 August 2007 – Samsung today took the wraps off its widescreen YP-P2 digital media player, as expected, but it also unveiled a second model that sports a kid-friendly animated user interface. The company added Bluetooth across the line-up.

The YP-T10 is geared straight toward a young audience. The full-screen moving GUI is played out on a 2in, 240 x 320 display. It’s MPEG 4 and WMV video capable as well as a music player – MP3 and WMA formats – and there’s a radio and photo viewer on board too.

Like all Samsung’s latest media players, the YP-T10 has Bluetooth on board not only for wireless stereo support, but also to stream songs to Bluetooth-equipped hi-fi kit. It can even feed two pairs of wireless headphones.

The YP-P2 Palm Theatre boasts a 3in, 16:9 ratio, 480 x 272 touch-sensitive display for video playback using the same formats as the YP-T10, as does the more traditionally styled YP-S5, the follow up to the YP-K5.

The YP-P2’s headline feature is its EmoTune input system that Samsung described as "going beyond just merely tapping selections". Think iPhone, we say.

The YP-S5 has a 1.5W speaker on board, and it too has Bluetooth. But while it’ll happily handle MPEG 4 video, there’s no WMV support. However, it supports the iTunes-friendly AAC audio format, so it’s clearly aimed at iPod owners upgrading. It’s available in a choice of black and white colour schemes, natch.

All three players come in 2GB, 4GB and 8GB forms, each in an array of colours – black, white and burgundy for the YP-P2; black, purple, red, yellow and white for the YP-T10. All three are due to go on sale by the end of September.
