Aunties on-demand service is prepped and ready to go.
The BBC’s on-demand service, iPlayer, will launch in open beta form on July 27th, having proved a success during closed testing. Users will be able to access it from bbc.co.uk/iplayer, giving them the chance to download their favourite programmes. They’ll then get 30 days to check them out before they get deleted.
Today’s announcement comes with loads more exciting news emerging from West London. Auntie is in talks with Virgin Media about launching on cable later this year.
They’re also lining up deals with Yahoo!, MSN, Tiscali and MySpace to name check but a few. There will even be links from YouTube.
Eventually, viewers will be able to stream on-demand, letting them watch shows straight away. Series stacking will mean downloads of selected episodes of old series will be available too.
In all, it sounds like a monster project, but one which really could change the way we watch the box forever.
